CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES CONTINUE TO BURN AS STRONG WINDS EXPECTED TO HIT CALIFORNIA TONIGHT
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2019 AS OF 9:00 AM PST
Overnight, wildfires across California continued to burn. Citizens of both southern and northern California are bracing for strong winds that will pick up tonight as wildfires continue to spread rapidly. Reports say around midnight PST, winds will shift from east to west and will produce wind speeds between 60-80 mph across the state. Currently, there are 11 active wildfires moving across the state of California. The Kincade fire has now burned 74,000 acres of land. Reports say that the fire is now 15% contained; however, over 90,000 buildings are still at risk. The Getty Fire continues to burn across Los Angeles and is about 5% contained. It is reported that over 10,000 residents are still at risk as parts of southern California prepare for what is being called the strongest Santa Ana wind event of the season.
Mandatory evacuations continue as firefighters fight to contain the Getty fire
Since the wildfires began on October 23, 2019, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes (more information below). Pacific Gas and Electric will continue to shut off power to over 600,000 residents and businesses across northern California in an effort to combat fires from power lines as high winds are expected across the state tonight. Reports say that the first to experience blackouts will be the upper Sacramento Valley. Residents living in communities experiencing or threatened by wildfires and high winds should continue to monitor local news and heed the warnings of local authorities.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urging citizens to be ready to evacuate. Individuals should heed the warnings of local authorities and remain safe as most of the fires are largely uncontained.
