January 2019 Newsletter

Posted On  January 1, 2019

Good Morning…

This month’s Disaster Discourse Monthly is a little different. Inspired by the New York Times’ reimagining of their Morning Briefing, we’re keeping the news short and sweet, so you can get back to saving the world.

If you’re in local government…

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) strategic goal to reduce complexity in disaster recovery coupled with the latest reforms from the Disaster Recovery Reform Act (DRRA) can feel like a heavy burden to digest. Hagerty’s experts offer steps you can take now to prepare for the growing responsibility and risk of future disasters.

What’s new…

Accuweather has announced that they’ve developed their own scale to measure hurricane intensity, but critics are wondering if it will create greater clarity or confusion, given the existing and problematic Saffir-Simpson scale.

If you want to recover faster…

You may want to invite your neighbors over for dinner. According to a study at Purdue University, strong community ties may be key in determining how quickly a community can bounce back from a disaster.

What’s happening…

Los Angeles recently released an earthquake early warning app that will give its citizens a few more seconds to prepare for an earthquake, even before they feel shaking.

If you accidentally clicked on that phishing email…

You may want to take Google’s quiz to learn more about how to detect scams and better protect yourself against a cyber-attack.

On a personal note…

Donald (Doc) Lumpkins was a “legend” in the emergency management industry, who passed away on January 26th. He was deeply respected for the work he did, and we join our colleagues around the nation in remembering Doc and his legacy.
Thanks for reading. We’ll see you next month.
