Preparing to Protect
October 14th, 2021 | By: Patrick Van Horne , Senior Managing Associate
What does it mean to be ready for a disaster or crisis? For many individuals, communities, and organizations across the country, that answer is very different in fall of 2021 than it was a couple of years ago.
In today’s interconnected world, becoming resilient to the stresses and shocks faced in life is arguably more important than ever before. It is no longer enough to simply prepare for wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters and hazards that are typical where you live when events such as a cargo ship getting stuck in the Suez Canal, a fire at a microchip plant in Japan, a cyber-attack on a fuel pipeline, or a global pandemic can have just as big of an impact on your life and goals.
Today, being prepared means that you have readied yourself for the anticipated disasters as well as the unforeseen events that lie in the future. Being confident that you are prepared to protect yourself, your family, and your community means that you have done the work to ensure you are ready to adapt to anything life throws your way.
During National Preparedness Month in September, several of our preparedness experts shared ways you can be ready for all that lies ahead – learn more below.

Climate Program Office FY 2022
Climate variability and change present society with significant economic, health, safety, and security challenges. As part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) climate portfolio within the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), the Climate Program Office (CPO) addresses these climate challenges by managing competitive research programs through which high-priority climate science, assessments, decision-support research, outreach, education, and capacity-building activities are funded to advance our understanding of the Earth’s climate system, and to foster the application and use of this knowledge to improve the resilience of our Nation and its partners. Through this announcement, CPO is seeking applications for eight individual competitions in FY 22. Several of these competitions are relevant to four high-priority climate risk areas that CPO is focusing on to improve science understanding and/or capabilities that result in user-driven outcomes: Coastal Inundation, Marine Ecosystems, Water Resources, and Extreme Heat.
