Hurricane Sandy Recovery
Project Overview
The city of New York suffered significant losses in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Although numerous federal programs were available to provide assistance, city officials, unfamiliar with the complex policies of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States (US) Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), faced challenges in navigating the conservative reimbursement guidelines and intricate grant application processes. As a result, they were at a disadvantage in securing the full funding needed for recovery efforts.
Understanding the Mission
The City, as identified by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), along with its individual agencies and affiliated organizations, required strategic support in managing the development and administration of its claims under federal disaster programs related to Hurricane Sandy.
The Hagerty Approach
Hagerty provided expert guidance to its clients on the FEMA Public Assistance (PA) program, the FEMA 404 Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), and the HUD Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. Additionally, Hagerty provided grant accounting and administrative support to City agencies and organizations, helping manage disaster grants and the projects and programs they funded.
Achieving Result
As a result, Hagerty assisted the client in managing $12.5 billion in Hurricane Sandy-related recovery funds from FEMA PA, HMGP, and HUD CDBG-DR programs.
