In mid-June, the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Colin, rapidly intensified off the South Carolina coast bringing heavy rains and sustained winds of more than 40 miles per hour to the coastline nearly overnight. According to the National Hurricane Center, rapid intensification of tropical systems will continue to pose a higher-than-average threat throughout the season. Moreover, all four recorded Category 5 hurricanes that have made landfall in United States (US) history were only tropical storms at three days out.
Therefore, it is imperative that communities have plans in place to ensure they are prepared for the impacts of fast-moving storms – including the potential need to evacuate their most vulnerable residents and shelter others. Hagerty’s Executive Chairman, Brock Long, recently spoke with The New Orleans Advocate about the importance of having actionable plans that rethink traditional methods of evacuation as storm’s increase in both frequency and magnitude.
