National Preparedness Month reminds us that effective disaster preparedness starts well before an emergency occurs. While no one can predict when or where the next disaster will occur, thoughtful planning can help families, businesses, and communities reduce risk and support a stronger recovery.
Recently, Hagerty’s Senior Advisor for Economic Development, Francisco Sánchez, joined Carolinas Informadas, a Spanish-language news and public-affairs program produced by WPDE ABC 15 that focuses on issues affecting Spanish-speaking communities across North and South Carolina. During the conversation, Francisco discussed hurricane preparedness, disaster recovery, and practical steps families and businesses can take before disaster strikes.
Building Readiness Before a Disaster
Francisco emphasized that uncertainty around disaster policy or a quiet hurricane season makes preparedness more important, not less. While government agencies and businesses play an important role in preparing communities and supporting recovery, preparedness starts at home. Key considerations include:
- Knowing how you will communicate with loved ones during an emergency
- Identifying where you will go and how you will get there
- Understanding what supplies, medications, and resources you may need
- Protecting your household and other things that matter most
- Knowing where to turn for information and assistance before and after a disaster
This National Preparedness Month, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” reinforces a simple message: readiness starts with each of us and the steps we take today to prepare for whatever comes next.
