Cancelations and Extensions Continue in the Wake of COVID-19

MONDAY, MARCH 30, 2020 AS OF 4:40 PM EST

There are currently 770,650 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide, with upwards of 156,000 of those confirmed cases occurring in the United States (US). President Trump recently signed the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) into law. The Act provides economic relief to many groups financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by offering assistance, such as: individual financial support, expanded unemployment insurance, emergency public health funding, and support for private businesses.

Recently, the International Olympic Committee announced that the Tokyo Games — slated to begin summer 2020 — would be postponed until 2021. Today, the committee confirmed that the Olympic games will begin exactly one year later, with the Olympics Games 2020 Tokyo opening ceremony scheduled for July 23, 2021. NBC Sports reported that this marks the first time in history that the start of an Olympics will be delayed to another year.

On March 29, President Trump announced a 30-day extension of his administration’s coronavirus guidelines, now until April 30, in an effort to slow the pandemic’s spread. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), told CNN that lifting social distancing restrictions will depend on the availability of new tests. As many states are imposing shelter-in-place advisories and mandates, it is critical that Americans (and those quarantined around the world) heed the guidance of federal, state, and local authorities and continue to practice social distancing.

National Public Radio (NPR) reports animal shelters across the country are urging people in self-isolation to consider adopting a new friend. Many animal shelters are using social media to share adoption information, live-streaming adoptable animals, and establishing drive-through pickups for foster families.

The shelter-in-place and social distancing guidelines can be difficult for everyone, and particularly children who are facing disruption to their routines and schooling. Inundated with a wealth of information and adapting to a new schedule, children can be greatly impacted by the virus without being infected. The World Health Organization (WHO) provided instruction sheets on healthy parenting during the COVID-19 outbreak. The CDC has also published resources on talking with children about COVID-19, with general principles about talking to children, facts about the pandemic, and other public health resources. With ongoing school closures, many children are not obtaining meals that they typically qualify to receive through school breakfast and lunch programs. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides resources and updates about children nutrition programs and state-led operations during the pandemic.
