According to a recent study by the United States (US) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the risk of flooding will increase by more than 25 percent over the next 30 years due to our changing climate. On average, flooding already causes over $30 billion in damage nationwide, often impacting more vulnerable populations and communities, thereby raising equity concerns with federal programs designed to mitigate flooding’s impacts.
POLITICO’s E&E News investigated these challenges and spoke with two of Hagerty’s mitigation experts, Mike Sprayberry and Vanessa Castillo, about how federal programs could evolve to equitably meet the growing needs associated with flooding mitigation, property elevation, and community relocation.
