According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2021 marked the seventh consecutive year in which the United States experienced 10 or more separate billion-dollar disasters. Yet, while major disasters are continuing to increase in frequency and magnitude, people continue moving to vulnerable places – areas where sea and riverine levels are rising, hurricanes are intensifying, and within reach of devastating wildfires.
Hagerty’s Executive Chairman, Brock Long, recently spoke with The Washington Post about these increasing hazards. While they are certainly attributable to climate change, he highlights the true lack of incentive, within disaster policy, for individuals and communities to properly prepare for and safeguard against these growing threats.
