Emergency declarations were made in both New York and Oregon over the weekend, for a total of eight states that have declared emergencies, with additional cities and counties making declarations as well.

In the United States, the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread with roughly 607 confirmed cases to-date. Many universities, schools, and private organizations have begun to take precautionary steps to minimize the spread of the disease. Princeton University announced it will, “virtualize any activities, such as lectures, seminars, and precepts, that can be put online” after their spring break and reduce large gatherings on campus. The City of Austin, Texas, declared a local disaster has put in place mitigation measures that effectively has led to the cancelation of South by Southwest. Additionally, The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has advised travelers, “particularly those with underlying health issues”, should not go on cruises as cruise ship passengers are at increased risk of person to person spread of infectious diseases.

World-wide, government entities, and organizations are halting mass gatherings and large events to prevent the possible continued spread of COVID-19. Ireland has canceled all of their St. Patrick’s Day parades, France banned mass gatherings of more than 1,000 people, and the 2020 Olympic Torch Ceremony will continue without spectators. Additionally, today Israel announced mandatory 14-day home isolation for any resident returning from abroad. Over the weekend, Italy took measures to control the further spread of COVID-19 by signing a decree that bans northern provinces from moving in and out of the region. The decree affects almost 16 million people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging all countries to prepare for the potential arrival of COVID-19. In doing so, the WHO states that countries should ready their emergency response systems, make plans for the need of increased supplies and personnel, and plan for an increased capacity to detect and care for patients.
